Student Etiquette
Common behavior expected of all students.
- Ensure a good training record and always arrive before the scheduled class time for training.
- Always set a good example to lower ranking students. They will regard you as a role model and copy your attitude, appearance, and behavior.
- Always demonstrate proper hygiene. Excessively long fingernails and toenails are not allowed.
- Treat your uniform with respect. Your dobok must be regularly washed and pressed. Do not let your belt touch the floor unless you are wearing it.
- Obey all instructions with speed. Run!
- Once in a position, do not move. Ignore all irritation and discomfort (but never detrimental pain). Remember discipline at all time.
- If you must leave the class early, seek permission before class starts, and inform the instructor when it is time for you to leave.
- Do not assume posture which tend to imply a lack of respect: arms folded, rearranging your belt or uniform when facing a senior, leaning against the wall, reclining or lying down on the floor, etc.
- When seated, assume a cross-legged (tailor) or seiza (on your shins) position. Do not lean against the wall or stick your legs out on the training floor.
- You are allowed to learn only those forms and techniques pertaining to your rank. Do not ask seniors to teach you movements above your rank.
- Do not be overly concerned with promotion. You will advance when you are ready.
- Remember that you are a martial artist, in class or not. Your conduct reflects positively or negatively on your instructor, your classmates, and your school. Do not misuse Tae Kwon Do for bullying, unnecessary fighting, or showing off.
